The Magic of Sweeping
I used to think sweeping was simply a way to clean the floor.
Now I think it's also a way to clear my mind.
There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about a broom.
No batteries.
No settings.
No rush.
Just slow strokes across the floor and the quiet satisfaction of watching yesterday leave the room.
Sometimes I sweep because the house needs it.
Sometimes I sweep because I need it.
The dust doesn't care whether I've had a difficult day.
The leaves that found their way onto the porch don't know what I've been worrying about.
One gentle pass after another, they gather into a small pile.
The work is simple.
Almost ordinary.
And somehow, by the time I carry the dust outside, I usually feel a little lighter too.
Maybe it's because our homes have a way of holding the energy of our busy days.
Conversations.
Lists.
Stress.
Small frustrations.
Perhaps sweeping isn't just about removing dirt.
Perhaps it's also a quiet way of saying,
"We're finished with today."
Not perfectly.
Just gently.
The Practice
Take a broom and choose one small space.
A porch.
A kitchen floor.
A favorite room.
As you sweep, don't think about cleaning.
Think about making room.
With each stroke, imagine you're brushing away one thing that no longer needs to stay.
Not the memories.
Not the lessons.
Only the weight.
When you're finished, open a window or step outside for a moment.
Take one slow breath.
Then say:
May this home feel lighter.
May I feel lighter too.
Reflection Prompt
