File 001: Mortimer

Classification: Amphibian
Status: Resident
Threat Level: None
Current Occupation: Lemon Tree Supervisor

Every garden seems to acquire a personality eventually.

Some have roses.
Some have hummingbirds.
Some have squirrels operating with complete disregard for property rights.

Mine has a frog named Mortimer.

Mortimer lives in the large pot that holds my lemon tree, tucked beside the tomatoes on the porch. I didn't exactly invite him to move in, but he appears to have inspected the accommodations and decided they were acceptable.

Who am I to argue?

I never know exactly when I'll see him. Most days he remains hidden among roots, leaves, and shadows. Then I'll step outside to water the plants or check on the tomatoes and suddenly there he is, peeking out from his leafy kingdom as though he's been supervising the entire operation all along.

Honestly, he probably has.

There is something deeply comforting about knowing a tiny wild creature has quietly decided that your little corner of the world is worth staying in.

He asks for nothing.

He pays no rent.

He contributes very little to household chores.

Yet his presence improves the property considerably.

I suspect this is true of many magical things.

The Society of Porch & Garden Affairs has determined that Mortimer serves as a reminder that not all joy arrives with fanfare.

Sometimes joy is simply discovering a familiar frog nestled beside a lemon tree.

Sometimes it is realizing your garden is alive in ways you never planned.

Sometimes it is watching tomatoes ripen while a tiny green neighbor keeps watch nearby.

And sometimes it is giving a name to a creature who absolutely did not request one.

For the official record, Mortimer appears healthy, content, and entirely unaware of his growing public reputation.

Additional observations will be filed as they become available.

Note: Reports regarding Hubert, the Front Yard Sprinkler Box Frog, remain under separate investigation and will be filed independently.

Respectfully submitted,

Brandi
